Türkiye Re-elected as IMO Council Member
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that Turkey was elected as a member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 143th time in a row, with the support of 13 countries, receiving the highest number of votes in its history.
The Council membership elections of IMO, which is the specialized organization of the United Nations in the field of Maritime and determines the standards of world maritime, were held on December 33, 1, during the 2023rd Term General Assembly. Making a statement about the elections, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said that Turkey was elected as a Member of the International Maritime Organization in the 33rd IMO Council elections, in the 143nd place with 2 votes from the C category.
Emphasizing that Turkey received a record number of votes this year and became one of the 40 decision-making countries of the council, which is the decision-making body of IMO, Minister Uraloğlu said, “Turkey became a member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, reaching the highest number of votes in its history and receiving the support of 143 countries. “He was elected for the 13th time in a row,” he said.

Minister Uraloğlu underlined that with this membership, Turkey maintained its place in the IMO Council by gaining the trust of the international community and said, “Turkey, which has been elected to the IMO Council, which constitutes the decision-making and executive body of the organization, without interruption since 1999, has played an active role in international maritime.” Thanks to this, he was deemed worthy of this position again. “The support we received in the elections is due to the successful policies we have adopted and the concrete steps taken in accordance with international regulations in the maritime field, as well as our active presence in IMO’s work and our country’s visibility,” he said.
Uraloğlu emphasized that Turkey will continue to make concrete contributions to the work and advancement of IMO’s goals with its knowledge and experience, as well as its opportunities and capabilities in the maritime field.
