122nd meeting of Izmir Economic Development Coordination Board (IEKKK) Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç SoyerIt was held at the Historical Gas Factory Cultural Center, hosted by . During the session, sea floods in the city were brought to the agenda. Izmir Institute of Technology Lecturer Dr. Doğan Kısacık enlightened the board members by making a scientific presentation about the flood. Then, the suggestions of the members were listened to by Mehmet Ali Kasalı, Term President of İzmir Economic Development Coordination Board. At the meeting, the rail system investments carried out by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in the city were also brought to the agenda.

“We will stand by those who are victimized”

Speaking about the sea flood, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, “When I think about what other disasters we could have experienced in the last 5 years, nothing else comes to my mind anymore. The last high tide was another disaster we never expected. We were able to take quick action. We are completing the damage assessment. More than 680 of our tradesmen are suffering. We took the parliamentary decision regarding these. We will make payments to repair the damages in December. In short, we will do our part to support our friends who suffer from this victimization,” he said.
“We saw that we could prevent sea flooding in Mavişehir”

Citing the measures taken within the scope of the coastal work implemented in Mavişehir as an example, Mayor Soyer said, “Until 3 years ago, sea flooding used to occur 2-3 times a year in Mavişehir. We built a retaining wall there, which cost 37 million liras at that time. It goes under 4 meters of water and is 2,2 kilometers long. We built this with a rock retaining wall of approximately 160 centimeters on top. “We have seen that we have been able to prevent the floods and sea overflows that have been occurring from time to time in Mavişehir for about 3 years,” he said.

“We will have taken the steps”

Providing information about the work to be carried out on the coasts of Izmir, Mayor Soyer said, “Where in Izmir should we carry out a work similar to this retaining wall? In which other coasts of Izmir are there similar threats? We are working on precautions in this regard. “We will share the point we reached as a result of these studies in a future session,” he said.

Warning from Scientist Kısacık

Participating in the meeting was Izmir High Technology Institute Lecturer Dr. Doğan Kısacık also spoke about the sea floods in the city and gave information about the current coastline of Izmir. Drawing attention to hydrodynamic conditions, Kısacık touched upon the importance of coastal protection structures. He added that there is a high probability of encountering sea floods in the short new period and made warnings.

“It will pay for itself”

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer, also talking about the rail system projects in the city, said: “There is only Örnekköy-Çiğli Tram approved from Ankara. Although we have made the changes they requested regarding Kemalpaşa, we have not received any feedback yet. There has been no response regarding the Gaziemir-Karabağlar metro for 2 years. However, serious progress has been made there. All of their projects and drillings have been completed. We are at this point in all three. We are opening Narlıdere Metro on 7 February and Çiğli Tram on 14 February. When we started the construction of Buca Metro, we predicted a period of 4 years. But we have data that we can finish it sooner. We can walk faster due to the structure of the ground. While we thought we would do it using 2 TBMs, it was possible to commission the third one. We will have completed it before 4 years. We will be able to transport 400 thousand people a day. These 400 thousand passengers mean an operating income of around 45 million euros per year. Once we complete it and put it into operation, the repayment of the financing we provided while generating operating income will begin. “It will be a self-funding project that covers its costs without leaving anyone’s pocket, without any of our citizens’ pockets, and without affecting the Metropolitan Municipality in any way,” he said.
